Carrier Pigeon: Illustrated Fiction and Fine Art

Short fiction

“Carrier Pigeon is an artist-run magazine of illustrated fiction and fine art. Four times a year we put creative control into the hands of the contributing writers, illustrators, fine artists and designers in order to promote respectful interdisciplinary collaboration.”

Russ Spitkovsky invited me to help launch this journal in 2009. I served as copyeditor, copywriter, and a member of the content team, as well as a contributing illustrator, for the first 12 issues. Each issue features six fully illustrated pieces of fiction encompassing prose, poetry, short play and monologue formats and using genre fiction such as science fiction and horror as touchstones. We funded the first issue on Kickstarter and partnered with Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, Chelsea Wine Vault, and Sacred Tattoo NYC for our early issue release exhibitions.

Carrier Pigeon has published work by a vast array of fine artists and illustrators, including Marshall Arisman, Bruce Waldman, Josh Bayer, Andre da Loba, and Keren Katz. We’ve also worked with a lot of great designers like Mandy Bixler and Andre da Loba.

CP is still going strong! Out of Carrier Pigeon also came the Guttenberg Arts facility in Guttenberg, NJ, and Paper Crown Press.

The two interior excerpts are from “Sloth,” written by Matthew Blair and illustrated by me. Volume 2, issue 2, was released at PRINT’S ALIVE, a Coney Island event featuring independent publishers and side show performances and hosted by Carrier Pigeon, Cannonball Press and Drive By Press.
